ARTICLE I — PES versus the Great Theories of Painting

From Leonardo da Vinci to Parallel Emotional Systems

Throughout the history of painting, major theories have changed not only the way artists create images, but also the way we understand what a painting can be.

From Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance conception of painting, through the transformations introduced by modernism and abstraction, to the theoretical positions of Kandinsky, Mondrian and Clement Greenberg, painting has repeatedly redefined its own boundaries.

Parallel Emotional Systems (PES) enters this historical dialogue from a contemporary perspective.

Created by Alain Polanski, PES is proposed as a new theory of painting.

It understands the artwork not as a static and definitively completed image, but as a dynamic system in which matter, time, artistic action and emotion remain in continuous interaction.

The central question is therefore no longer only:

What does the painting represent?

but also:

What continues to happen within the painting after the artist has stopped painting?

In this sense, PES proposes another way of thinking about the ontology of the painted image — one in which transformation, material processes and emotional structures become integral elements of the work.

The image stops moving, but does not end.

This first article places Parallel Emotional Systems in dialogue with some of the major theories that have shaped the history of painting.
